Q

Why is the challenge significant for the Catholic Church?

A
  • humans are called to nurture the environment as it is our common home and God the creator has created this earth so we can be stewards and tend to the earth rather than abuse its resources

Q

What is the stance of stewardship?

A

Stewardship is a stance that means looking after God’s Creation – acting like ‘stewards’ to the world around them. This was the natural way all people related to the world around them until the rapid changes heralded by the Industrial Revolution

Q

What is the stance of dominion?

A

It was believed that humans had been instructed by God to have dominion (power) over Creation, and to subdue it for their own purposes was what God intended. (became relevant after the industrial revolution as it was self serving)

Q

What is the church’s present stance on the challenge?

A

The understanding that nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it.

  • all Creation is inter-connected and that nature is not separate from us, not ‘a mere setting in which we live’ (par 139). We live within the world, and so how we treat the world directly affects us and future generations.

Q

What stance has the Religious Tradition taken towards the challenge?

The Roman Catholic tradition, under the leadership of Pope Francis, has joined with other religious traditions and secular organisations in demanding change.
In his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ the particular stance he takes, informed by Catholic teaching, is INTEGRAL ECOLOGY.

Q

What aspects relate to this challenge?

A

Laudato Si is a significant papal (written by a Pope) encyclical and so is a TEXT.
- The whole debate is about our behaviour in the world, and how Catholics in particular should behave because of their belief that ‘God is the Creator of all that is’ [Nicene Creed] … BELIEF.
And because it is about how we should behave and the choices Catholics should make, the debate is also centrally about … ETHICS.

Q

How has the tradition acted to support the intended outcomes – what concrete things has it done; (organisation two; laudato si circles)

A

ORGANISATION ONE:
- Laudato Si’ Circles are small groups that meet regularly to deepen their relationship with God as Creator and all members of creation

  • The nature of the Laudato Si’ circles relates directly to Pope Francis’ advocacy response
  • Local community engagement and activism;
  • Greening of local Catholic facilities; a response of service as direct action is taken to combat the ecological crisis at hand.
  • The Laudato Si circles intend on building a community that lives and values the message of the Laudato Si
  • speaking out, educating and protesting for an “ecological conversion” (Laudato Si Chapter 6 217)
  • the Church is unified and strengthened as members are able to work together to positively shift society’s mindset towards the environment and climate change.

Q

How has the tradition acted to support the intended outcomes – what concrete things has it done (organisation two- earthcare)

A

The group ‘Catholic Earthcare Australia’ is a an environmental organisation which was established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

  • they have issued a media release regarding the topic. the have partnered with Catholic Religious Australia and Catholic Mission to produce a book titled The Francis Effect II
  • they have partnered with Caritas Australia and the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council to develop climate change recourses
  • they have partnered with the Global Catholic Climate Movement to endorse initiatives such as Meatless Fridays and the Catholic Climate Petition.
  • has helped raise awareness on the crisis, therefore more people are exposed to the harsh reality and consequences and there for the wider society of today are more likely to take action
