Climate change // mitigation and adaption Flashcards
What does mitigation involve?
it is anthropogenic intervention to reduce the anthropogenic forcing of the climate system
Precautions of climate change can be divided into three categories
- international commitments
- national actions
- personal lifestyle changes
mitigation strategies // stabilise or reduce GHGs // reduction of energy consumption
- reduce energy waste by using it more efficiently eg. insulation
- reduce overall demand for energy eg. eat less meat, use public transport
- adopt carbon taxes
- set national limits on GHG production
- change government priorities eg. London has toll charge for cars driving into city
mitigation strategies // stabilise or reduce GHGs // reduction of emissions of nitrous oxides + methane from agriculture
- reduce methane production eg. change cows diets to produce less methane
- capture more methane produced from landfill sites
- sustainable agriculture
mitigation strategies // stabilise or reduce GHGs // use of alternatives to fossil fuels
nuclear power
renewable energy sources
mitigation strategies // remove carbon dioxide from atmosphere // increase amount of photosynthesis
- afforestation
- reduce deforested areas
- restore grassland
mitigation strategies // remove carbon dioxide from atmosphere // geo-engineering
- scatter iron, nitrates or phosphates on oceans to increase algal blooms which take up more carbon + act as carbon sink
- release sulphur dioxide from airplanes to increase global dimming
- build w light colour roofs to increase albedo + reflect more sunlight
adaptation strategies // change agricultural production
- irrigate more effectively in drought areas
- store rainwater for times of shortage
- breed tolerant crops
- grow different crops
adaptation strategies // manage the weather
- seed clouds to encourage rainfall
- plant trees to encourage more rainfall
