Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
define weather
A
short term changes in temperature (pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloud coverage, wind direction)
2
Q
what is climate? and what are the 2 factors that determine an area’s climate?
A
- physical properties of an area based on analysis of its weather records over a long period of time ( at least 30 yrs)
the 2 factors that determine an area’s climate are:
- temperature
- amount and distribution of precipitation
3
Q
what is the greenhouse gas effect?
A
- a natural process where the clouds and gases act like “glass in a green house”
- it helps keep earths mean surface temperature liveable
4
Q
what is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
A
- more carbon dioxide is radiated off from the earth but is re-emitted back on the earth bc it bounced back
- increase of greenhouse gases since the 1800’s caused global warming leading to global temperature increases
5
Q
what are some global climate consequences?
A
- global temperature increases
- sea ice is decreasing
- glacier ice is decreasing
- rise in sea levels
6
Q
what are some of the effects of climate change in canada?
A
- increased changes in precipitation
- decreasing in sea ice over time
- agriculture: we may not be able to grow wheat due to temperature and precipitation changes
- biodiversity decline in salmon bc of temperature change in water
7
Q
what are some of the things we can do to reduce climate change?
A
- reduce fossil fuel use and shift to renewable resources
- improve energy efficiency
- reduce deforestation
- use more sustainable agriculture
- limit urban sprawl
- reduce poverty
- slow population growth
