Climate change Flashcards
What is weather vs climate
weather= hours to days, current conditions, changes quickly, happens at specific places and times
climate= years to decades, avarage weather patters over a long period of time, more stable and predictable
What are 3 natural factros effecting the climate
Volcanos: when they errupt the either cool earth by blocking sunlight or can warm it by releasing gases like CO2
Ocean currents: warm and cool ocean currents move heat around affecting climate of nearby areas
The sun: ITs energy can change which can either warm or cool the earth
What are green house gases
gases in eaths atmosphere that can trap heat and contribute to global warming
What are the 4 main greenhouse gases and what causes them to react
a)CO2 (carbon dioxide)= fossil fuel burning, deforistaion
b)CH4 (Methane)= livestock, natrual gas production
c) N2O (Nitrous oxide)= Agricultural practices
d)CFCs (chlorofluorocarbonds): Air conditioning, refrigerants
What is Albedo
How much sunlight is reflected (the hotter the less albedo)
What are the main antrhopogenic (human created) carbon sources
a) fossil fuel burning
b) deforestation
c) industrial processes
d) transportation
What is the greenhouse effect
When gasses trap heat in earths atmosphere which warms the planet and is positive but can be negative if it overheates
