Chemistry Flashcards
- What is a valance electron
the electron on the most outer shell
Name all of the group names
- alkali metals
- alkali earth metals
- halogens
- noble gases
Different between periods and groups
periods= horizontal lines
groups= vertical lines
What is an Ionic, molecular and covalent compound
Ionic= metal+non metal
Molecular= non metal+ non metal
Covalent= metal+metal
What is a diatomic molecule
2 atoms of the same element (gases) bonded together
Give examples of diatomic molecules
H2 O2 F2 Br2 I2 N2 Cl2
What is a binary compound
2 different elements as a compound
What is a polyatomic ion
one of the ions named at the top of periodic table, charged group of 2+ ions
What is the law of conservation mass
no mass can be created or destroyed only re arranged
What is synthesis and decomposition
S= Non metal+metal= ionic compound
D= Ionic compouds= metal+nonmetal
What is single displacement and double displacement
SD= compound+element= elememt+compound
DD=compound+compound= compound+compound (negative/positive charged switches places)
What are acids and bases
Acids=donates hydrogen ions (tastes sour and turns red) 0-6.9
Bases= Accepts hydrogen ions/ give hydroxide (tastes bitter and turns blue) 7.1-14
What is neutralization
when an equation is balanced on both sides of the equal sign
what do periods and groups tell you
periods: tell you the amount of electron shells
groups: tell you the valance electrons
If theres ever acid in the word formula what element to you put into the chemical one
hydrogen
