Climate Change Flashcards
Physical causes of climate change X5
-volcanos
-sunspot activity
-milankovitch theory of eccentricity
-axial obliquity
-melting muskeg
Physical causes of volcanos X3
-CO2 release green house effect
-sulfur dioxide release
-ash if reaches stratosphere blown around creates cooling
Sunspot activity
11 year cycle
Periods where sun emits more energy = increased brightness and energy received by earth
Milankovitchs theory of eccentricity
Earths orbit becomes more elliptical and can cause cooling and warming
Axial obliquity
Changes in the angle of earths axis and causes changes in global climate patterns
Melting muskeg
Summer months in arctic when top layer melts creating marshy muskeg and due to permafrost layer there is no where to drain so vegetation decays in water and releases methane gas
Human causes of climate change X 4
-CO2
-Nitrous oxides
-methane gas
-CFC’s
Human causes -CO2
X3 reasons
-fossil fuels burnt and increase in population increases demand for devices
-increased car ownership, more cars sitting in traffic jams releasing fumes
-deforestation releases CO2 when burnt to clear area quickly
Human causes - Methane
X2 reasons
-landfill sites due to decay and higher population means more waste
-increase in population increases demand for beef and belching cows release methane
Human causes - Nitrous oxides
X2 reasons
-more cars on roads due to population emit exhaust fumes
- rising food demand increases production of fertilisers
Human causes - CFC
X2 reasons
- incorrect disposal of refrigerators as insulation of shredded releases cfcs
-rising temperatures increases demand for air conditioning in which coolants used create cfcs
Impacts of climate change LOCAL
X3
-increased rainfall
-temperature increase
-rising sea level
Impacts of climate change GLOBAL
X3
-sea level rise
-extreme weather
-disease
Impacts of climate change
-increased rainfall
X4
-flooding will destroy houses and transport
-hard to grow crops
-tourism decrease
-sewage overflow causes disease
Impacts of climate change
- temperature increase
X3
-heatwaves increasing heat stroke pressuring services
-less snow means less tourism for winter sports
-mosquitos migrating spreading malaria
Impacts of climate change
-rising sea level LOCAL
X3
-coastal erosion destroying homes displacing people
-lower coastal population lowers workers for tourism
-coastal erosion leads to loss of habitats
Impacts of climate change
-sea level rise GLOBAL
X3
-low lying coastal areas (Bangladesh) will experience large scale displacement
-fish and coastal animals effected
-loss of tourist income
Impacts of climate change
-extreme weather
X3
-mass migration of people (southern USA)
-damaged housing effecting businesses
-increase in intensity and frequency of storms (USA)
Impacts of climate change
-disease
X3
-increased temps =migration of mosquitos
-I’ll health pressuring services
-overflowing sewage
Positives of climate change
X3
-farmers can diversify =less imported food
-reduced heating bills in cost of living crisis
-more tourism
Management strategies of climate change LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL
X4 + efficiency
-promotion of energy efficient products (lightbulbs) = dimmer so many don’t use
-reduce reuse recycle (10p carrier bags) = massively reduced waste in production
-low emission cars (electric/hybrid more fuel efficient) = too expensive
-renewable energy (wind turbines) =great as in 2020 97% of Scotlands electricity was powered by renewables
management strategies of climate change INTERNATIONAL
X2 + efficiency
-Kyoto protocol international agreement linked to UN convention on climate change = agreed to cut emissions by 5% bellow 1990 levels
-Paris agreement 2015 aimed to keep climate change levels below 2°c = governments agreed to report back every 5 years
