Climate change Flashcards
Learn for end of years
Name three examples of fossil fuels
Coal, gas and methane
What is produced when fossil fuels are burnt
Carbon dioxide
How are weather systems changing in a result of climate change
More unpredictable, increase in rainfall, and tempretures
Why will planting more trees help us stop or slow down climate change
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. This will control the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and help battle against fossil fuels.
how can we prevent climate change
stop our reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternative sources of energy that are clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable
name a place where you can see that climate change is taking place
Greenland
what problems are climate change making for Greenland
climate change is causing an increase in tempretures meaning that more ice is melting, leading to an increase in sea levels and a decrease in land as the water is steadily washing it away.
give the definition of droughts
As tempretures increase, soils dry up: this makes droughts worse
give the definition of extinction
Animals and plants are adapted to specific conditions. Climate change means those conditions are changing, making life harder and harder.
give the definition of the rise of sea levels
Melting ice on land rises sea levels. The sea also expands as it gets warmer, increasing levels even more
give the definition of wildfires
Wildfires happen during periods of hot, dry weather. Climate change makes these hot, dry weather conditions more likely to occur
give the definition of heatwaves
As global tempretures rise, heatwaves get hotter and happen more often. In the UK, heatwaves are now 30 times more likely to happen because of climate change
give the definition of storms
Higher tempretures mean that more water evaporates from the surface of the oceans. More moisture in the atmosphere means more rain. The storms also have more energy.
how can adding grass to roofs help us tackle climate change
add grass to roofs, this will allow it to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as well as the roofs soak up carbon emissions
how can building more wind turbines help us tackle climate change
the electricity generated by wind turbines has a zero carbon emission although it is unpredictable as it is based of weather
