Climate Adaption Flashcards
What are the main climate change risks?
- Increased storm activity
- Sea level rise
- Storm Surges
- Flooding
- Ocean Acidification
- Drought
- El Nino (causes migration displacement and food insecurity)
Why is climate change more talked about than other global issues?
- Climate change is an additional stressor on the issues we already face.
What is adaption?
- The process of adjustment to actual or expected climate and its effects. In human systems, adaption seeks to moderate or avoid harm or exploit beneficial opportunities
- Climate change adaption is about changing our management and planning practices.
In the History of climate change adaption, what did the first generation look at?
- Should we adapt?
- Mitigation - focused
- 1990 to 2000
- IPCC, Article 1 & 2
In the History of climate change adaption, what did the second generation look at?
- How do we adapt?
- Strategy focused
- 2001
- IPCC, Article 3
In the History of climate change adaption, what did the third generation look at?
- Is adaption occurring?
- Case study focused
- 2007
- IPCC, Article 4
In the History of climate change adaption, what did the fourth generation look at?
- What impedes adaption?
- Constraints and limits focused
In the History of climate change adaption, what did the fifth generation look at?
- Is it effective
- Monitoring and Evaluation focused
- IPCC, Article 5
What are the key framing questions for adaption?
- What are we adapting to?
- How do we adapt?
- What do we want to achieve?
- Who adapts?
Draw and label the Key Framing Questions diagram.

What are some adaption strategies?
- Seawalls for coastal protection
- Ecosystem-based adaption (e.g. planting vegetation to reduce storm impacts)
- Improved emergency management
- Planning regulations (e.g. consider sea level rise)
- Health
- Resilient housing
- Reciprocity
- Policies and Legislation
- Institutional Changes
- Insurance
When were the hottest years of Earth recorded?
- The hottest 15 years on record have all been recorded after 1998
What happens if the Earth doesn’t stop warming?
- By the end of the 21st century the global average temperature could have risen to about 8 degrees Celsius and if this happens then we could experience some major issues such as food shortage, extinctions and a redrawing of the worlds coastlines
What is the process for how is local adaption managed?
- Scale
- Responsibility
- Decision Making
- Implementation
What is the “Scale” part of the local adaption management process?
Firstly the scale of the issue is analysed (landscape, community, etc)
What is the “Responsibility” part of the local adaption management process?
The second section is where responsibilities will be distributed (legally, regulations, perceptions)
What is the “Decision Making” part of the local adaption management process?
This is where government will decide who is involved in making decisions and at what level can decisions be taken.
What is the “Implementation” part of the local adaption management process?
Lastly is implementation where adaption is implemented locally
What is the decision cycle?
- The decision cycle is used to find appropriate adaptive solutions
What is the first and second step of the Decision Cycle?
- Adaption options and risk minimisation
- Select a preferred option, implementing it and then monitoring it
What are the 3rd and 4th steps of the Decision Cycle?
- The option is assessed on the climate - affected decisions and overall goals
- Potential impacts within the decisions lifetime?
