climate Flashcards
Blizzard
a severe snow storm with strong winds:
snowstorm, squall
Blizzard conditions made the main roads almost impassable.
Glacier
a large mass of ice that moves slowly
iceberg, glacial mass, icecap
As the weather got warmer, the glacier started to melt.
Salinity
the fact of containing salt of the amount of salt contained in something
The water was carefully controlled for temperature, salinity and acidity.
Evaporate
to cause a liquid to change to a gas, especially by heating:
vaporize, diffuse, dissipate, gasify, steam
The high concentration of sugars forms a syrup when the sap (bitki özü) evaporates.
Scorching
(of the weather) very hot:
fiery, searing, sweltering, burning
It was scorching hot at the beach.
precipitation
water that falls from the clouds towards the ground, especially as rain or snow:
rainfall, shower, drizzle
Hail (dolu) and sleet (sulu sepken) are types of precipitation.
The forecast is for dry, cloudy weather with no precipitation expected.
Moisture
a liquid such as water in the form of very small drops, either in the air, in a substance, or on a surface:
mist, huminity
These plants need a rich soil that retains moisture.
The plants may obtain a large part of their moisture from the fog.
tidal wave
an extremely large wave caused by movement of the earth under the sea, often caused by an earthquake (= a shaking of the earth)
The tidal wave swept inland for 22 miles, flooding fields and leaving many of them heavily salinated (to add salt to).
cyclone
wind moving in a circular direction towards an area of low atmospheric pressure:
Weather forecasters say the cyclone should move offshore, bringing dry conditions on Sunday
gale
a very strong wind:
hurricane, windstorm, blow, typhon
We can’t get out till gale is over, also ship repaired.
Drizzle
rain in very small, light drops:
Drizzle occurs within a moist air mass when it is stable.
smog
a mixture of smoke, gases, and chemicals, especially in cities, that makes the atmosphere difficult to breathe and harmful for health:
pollution, fog, haze, fumes, exhaust
As we flew into the airport, we could see a murky yellow smog hovering over the city.
avalanche
a large amount of ice, snow, and rock falling quickly down the side of a mountain.
mudslide, snowslide, landslide, icefall
Large volcanic debris avalanches; characteristics of source areas, deposits, and associated eruptions.
Avalanches kill more than 150 people worldwide each year
