Climate Flashcards
The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet
Atmosphere
The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles that cause ionization
Radiation
A current in a fluid that results from convection
Convection Current
A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants
Global Warming
Is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic
Acid Precipitation
A layer in the earth’s stratosphere at an altitude of about 6.2 miles (10 km) containing a high concentration of ozone, which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun
Ozone Layer
The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc
Weather
The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period
Climate
The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth’s equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
Latitude
A wind from the direction that is predominant at a particular place or season
Prevailing Winds
a is a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area
Mountains
Is a seasonal directed movement of seawater generated by forces acting upon this mean flow, such as breaking waves, wind, the Coriolis effect, cabbeling, temperature and salinity differences, while tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon
Ocean Currents
A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g., forest or tundra
Biome
Is a period of long-term reduction in the temperature of Earth’s surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers
Ice Age
A cycle of disturbances in the sun and its atmosphere (such as the fluctuation in the numbers and areas of sunspots or the form and shape of the corona) of an average length of about 11 years
Solar Cycle
