Q

How is a temperature range an important measure of a climate?

A

It tells us about organisms that can survive the extreme heat and cold and provide detailed information that is unique to a region or climate.

Q

Why is the pattern of precipitation a better indicator of climate than average precipitation?

A

Precipitation may not be spread evenly over the year and while two regions may have the same annual precipitation, one may have small amounts throughout the year while one may have droughts and extreme rain. Both types will much different vegetation patterns.

7
Q

How does latitude help determine the temperature of an area?

A

It affects the amount of solar energy the area receives. An example is the equator where the sun’s rays hit the Earth at an almost 90 degree angle. The concentrated solar energy results in higher temperatures.

Q

How does the sun power the water cycle?

A

The sun warms the surface creating water vapor which eventually cools and falls as precipitation as the water cycle.

Q

How does the sun power the wind?

A

The sun warms the Earth’s surface unevenly creating different areas of air pressure. As air moves from areas of high pressure to low pressure, it creates wind.

Q

What is a rain shadow?

A

The side of a mountain that does not get much rain because the moist air hits the other side of the mountain and releases it’s moisture as the air rises and cools. The air is them dry as it descends.

14
Q

How do large bodies affect area temperature?

A

Water absorbs and releases energy more slowly than land does. Therefore, climates with large bodies of water have less swings in temperature ranges.

15
Q

What are currents on the surface of the ocean called?

A

Surface currents

16
Q

How do ocean currents affect global temperatures?

A

The ocean currents cool or warm the air as they affect the coastal climates they touch.

17
Q

What are the three major climate zones?

A

Temperate, Polar, and Tropical

18
Q

What are tropical climates?

A

Tropical climates are characterized by high temperatures and are located in the equatorial region.

19
Q

What are polar climates?

A

Polar climates are climates that rarely rise above 10 degrees Celsius and with a latitude of over 66.5 degrees.

20
Q

What are temperate climates?

A

Temperate climates are climates where the average temperature is between 18 and 10 degrees Celsius and is located between the tropical and polar zones.
