Climate Flashcards
What areas come under the Highland Climate?
This region consist of northern, north-western and western highlands.
Do the Northern Mountains experience more rainfall or the Western Mountains and WHY?
Northern mountains because they have higher altitudes.
How is the Lowland Climate?
It has an extreme climate with hot summers, cold winters, and summer monsoon rainfall.
Aridity increases when moving from north to south,
How does the rainfall differ from North to South in the Lowland Climate Regions and Why?
The rainfall decreases when moving from North to South as the northern parts have higher altitudes.
High Altitude = More Rainfall
How are the winters in the Coastal Region?
The Coastal Region experiences mild winters with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C.
Why are humidity levels more than 50% in the Coastal Region?
It is more humid because of the proximity to the sea. The water from the sea evaporates and adds moisture to the air.
How are the summers and the winters in the Arid Climate?
Summers are very hot while winters are mild.
Why do the areas near the equator receive MORE sunlight?
The equator is positioned directly under the Sun during most of the year. Sunlight hits it at nearly a 90° angle, meaning the light is more concentrated and intense compared to higher latitudes, where sunlight spreads over a larger area.
What is the Maritime Influence?
Water heats up and cools down more slowly than land, which makes the temperature more milder in Coastal Areas.
It also causes more humidity because of the water vapors being evaporated.
Describe the relationship between Altitude, Temperature and Air density.
The air is the most dense at sea level as there is more air pressure there, as compared to higher altitudes.
The temperature at higher altitudes drop 6.5°C because there are less particles to absorb and retain heat.
Describe the relationship between Cloud cover and Temperature.
During the daytime, clouds reflect some of the incoming solar radiation back into space which causes the temperature to decrease.
However at night, the temperatures increase as the clouds trap the outgoing heat.
How does the Angle of the Sun and the Latitude affect the climate of Pakistan?
Sun rays travel a shorter distance to the equator, hitting it directly and concentrating heat. In contrast, rays cover longer distances to reach the North and South Poles, spreading out the heat and reducing its effect.
