climate Flashcards
describe the greenhouse effect?
the sun heats the earth, the warm surface of the earth emits radiation back which is then absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. the heat trapped in the atmosphere then heats the earth.
what is climate change?
any change in global temperatures and precipitation over time due to natural variability or human activity
what is global warming?
global warming is the gradual increase in the earths temperature as a result of the greenhouse effect.
explain one cause of climate change
deforestation:
- trees naturally consume carbon dioxide via photosynthesis
- cutting them down will leave more carbon in the atmosphere
explain another cause of climate change
meat industry:
- population increase, more food demand
- more cattle being grazed
- cows produce methane via passing gas
- methane is a greenhouse gas which traps heat in the atmosphere
what is mitigation?
mitigation is when you prevent and try to stop climate change from happening.
what is adaptation?
adaptation is when you learn to live with the effects of climate change and adjusting to it.
state some examples of mitigation:
- using solar panels
- using public transportation
state examples of adaptation to climate change:
- planting drought resistant crops
- weather alerts
- grain storage
- planting trees for shade
- insulating buildings
