Dealing with client’s suicidal ideation
tries to obtain consent from Mr. Porter before sharing any confidential information that would be needed to assist him, but Mr. Porter refuses → discusses different courses of action with Mr. Porter—like contacting his family doctor, referring him to crisis support services, or contacting 911—and explains OT is obligated to do something if she has concerns about his safety
OTs are permitted to disclose personal health information if they have reasonable grounds to believe disclosure is necessary to eliminate or reduce significant risk of serious bodily harm to a person or group of persons
family doctor → community mental health crisis services → 911
teenagers suicide thoughts → call the crisis line (no need consent)
adult (respect their wish → provide resources → call 911 if immediate harm)
