Welfare state
A
- Basic standard of living a person is entitled to by the government
- benefits for sick, old, unemployed and families
- not the first suggestion of benefits but hugely expanded them

A
- 1942
- suggested the welfare state

NHS
A
- Introduced in 1948
- Churchill and conservative government originally voted against it
- soon changed their view after it’s proved to be worth it
- however both parties fought over how much spending and taxation should go towards it

Indian independence
A
- Full independence awarded in 1947 due to India’s calls for it
- Britain too bankrupt to afford keeping the empire together

Issues with the empire
A
- WWII led to bankruptcy in Britain so we couldn’t afford to keep the empire under our jurisdiction
- starting with India, during the 50s, 60s and 70s the empire fell apart
- Britain has never been the level it was before in terms of wealth and power

- public services (water, electricity and transport etc (essential to human life)) - both parties agreed to nationalisation of these
