What is cleft lip?
A split or open section of the upper lip.
Where does the opening in cleft lip occur?
At any point along the top lip, and can extend as high as the nose.
What does cleft lip result from?
Failure of the fronto-nasal and maxillary processes to fuse
What is cleft palate?
a defect in the hard or soft palate at the roof of the mouth
What is cleft palate?
a defect in the hard or soft palate at the roof of the mouth
What is cleft palate due to?
Failure of the palatine processes and the nasal septum to fuse
What does failure of the palatine processes fusing with the nasal septum result in?
an opening between the mouth and the nasal cavity.
What type of inheritance is cleft palate associated with?
Polygenic inheritance
What increases the risk of cleft palate?
Maternal use of antiepileptics
What are the complications of Cleft palate?
Speech problems
Feeding problems
Increased risk of otitis media
What is the management for cleft palate?
Surgery
At what age is cleft lip repaired?
At around 3 months
At what age is cleft palate repaired?
Between 6-12 months of age
