Classifying Skills Flashcards
3 Fundamental motor skills
Stability, Locomotor, Manipulative
Stability
Balance and control of the body
Locomotor
Walking, Running
Manipulative
Control of an object (catching & throwing)
Stages of Learning
Cognitive, Associative & Autonomous
Cognitive
Trying to comprehend movement, attention on movement, inconsistent and unrelaxed, lack confidence, blocked practice & closed environment
Associative
‘Practice skill’ - refining technique, fewer errors, begin looking at external stimuli
Autonomous
No longer consciously thinks about the skill, developed anticipation, detect own errors and correct them
Relationship between motor skills, confidence and success
Those that learn fundamental motor skills and perfect them from a younger age are inclined to participate in relevant sports sooner due to greater confidence, therefore leading them to a greater likelihood in sporting success, if pursued.
Movement precision
Fine (recruitment of smaller muscle associated with movement involving precision - darts, writing)
Gross (recruitment of larger muscle groups - running)
Types of movement
Discrete (obvious beginning and end - kicking, throwing)
Serial (series of discrete skills in a sequence - triple jump, gymnastics)
Continuous (no definite beginning or end - swimming)
Predictability of environment
Open (less predictable - opponents, weather, differing surface)
Closed (greater control, predictable and self paced)
Direct based coaching
Coaches make all decisions, learner has limited need to make decisions or think independently, feedback on every practice attempt
Constraints based coaching
Using constraints (boundaries that shape a learner's self organising patterns, understanding and decision making). Factors that influence learning and performance are constraints.
Types of constraints
Individual (body size, fitness level, decision making skills)
Environmental (Cultural norms, locality of player, auditory feedback/noise, weather conditions, light)
Task (rules of sport, equipment size and availability, field/pitch/court dimensions, team size)
