Classify Rocks Into Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Flashcards
Formed through the cooling and solidification og magma/lava
Igneous rocks or magmatic rocks
What are the 2 types of Igneous rocks? Differentiate.
Intrusive - Formed from solidification of magma below the earth’s surface
Extrusive - Solidification of lava on the earth’s surface
Formed by the deposition and cementation of mineral or organic particles on the floor of oceans and other bodies of water at the earth’s surface
Sedimentary rocks
3 types of sedimentary rocks
Clastic - formed from the mechanical weathering debris of rocks
Chemical - formed when dissolved materials precipitate from solution
Organic - build-up of plant or animal debris
Subjected to heat and pressure and from existing parent rock in the process called metamorphism
Metamorphic rocks
2 types of metamorphic rocks
Foliated - through pressure due to compression of rocks that create bonds called foliation
Non foliated - has no foliation or bands
