Classifing Flashcards
Humans classify things because
Convince
Study living things more manageable
Easier to identify living organisms
Help us see relationship between species
Domain
Archaea, eubacteria and eukaryotae
Kingdom
Plantae, animalia, fungi , protoctista
Prokaryotae
Phylum
Body plan - backbone ?
Class
General traits e.g number legs
Order
Sun-division class
Additional info
E.g carnivore?
Family
Closely related genera
Genus
Closely related species
Species
Basic unit of classification
Some variation but essentially same - can interbreed
Human classification
Animalia Chordata Mammalia Primate Hominidae Homo Sapiens
Binomial naming system
Genus specie
Common name doesn’t work because:
- same organism may have completely different common name in different parts of a country
- translation of languages may give different common names
Biological definition of species
A group of organisms that can freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Phylogenetic definition of specie
A group of individual organisms that are very similar in appearance, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics
Aristotle classified animals into 3 groups
Live and move on land
Live and move in water
Move through air
Other early classification systems of Linnaeus and other scientists were based on observable features but this limited it to features of organisms that you can see
