Classification Part 3 Flashcards
Intraspecific variation
Variation within species
Interspecific variation
Variation between species
Continuous variation
Two extremes and full range of intermediate values
Histogram
Discontinuous variation
Distinct categories with no intermediate values
- gender
- blood Grp
- flagella?
Causes variation
Genetic variation
Environmental variation
Adaptation
A characteristic that enhances a species chance of survival in the habitat
Adaptations are either
Anatomical (structural features) Behavioural Physiological (processes and biochemistry)
Anatomical adaptations marram grass
Long roots - reach water deep underground
Leaves curled - reduces surface area exposed to wind and traps at against lower The dermis so moisture can build up an enclosed space
Leaves covered in thick waxy cuticle - reduces evaporation of water from the cells of leavf
Behaviour Adaptation of Marram grass
Rolling leaf more tightly and closing stomata
When marram got covered in sand grow more quickly to reach sunlight
Physiological/biochemical adaptations marram
Guard cells work in a similar way to open and close stomata
Marholm is not very salt tolerant but it maintains a cell water potential vets now up and any other plants to enable it to live in salty conditions
Natural selection
- mutation creates alternative version of gene
- Intraspecific variation
- selection pressure
- individuals with advantageous characteristics survive
- pass on advantageous characteristics (inheritance)
- adaptation
Resistance
Insects and pesticides
Bacteria and autobiotics
