Classifications of Diabetes Flashcards
why do 1/3 of acromegaly patients have diabeetus??
excess growth hormone can cause insulin resistance (as well as hepatic gluconeogenesis and glygogenolysis)
why do cushings patients get diabetes?
excess cortisol causes poor muscle uptake of glucose, and increases hepatic gluconeogenesis
why do pheochromocytoma patients get diabetes?
excess adrenaline / noradrenaline inhibits insulin secretion and increases glycogenolysis + lipolysis
autoimmune conditions closely associated with T1?
coeliac and thyroid - both 5% raised from 1%
20% of CF get DM
is MODY…
a) auto recc
b) auto dom
c) x linked
d) sporadic
b - auto dom :)
what causes MODY 3?
HNF 1 alpha mutation
what causes MODY 1?
HNF 4 alpha mutation
what causes MODY 2?
glucokinase mutation
rank the 3 most common MODYs
1st - MODY 3
2nd - MODY 2
3rd - MODY 1
treatment of MODY 1 and 3?
diet - oral (SU mostly as still have functional b cells) - insulin
as it progresses
treatment of MODY 2?
Diet only!!
normally stable with no complications
what it the Tx for the two types of neonatal diabetes?
Transcient = insulin until resolves around 12 weeks permanent = life long insulin / oral hyperglycaemic agents
what does the mutation affect in neonatal diabetes?
the K channel
describe who classically gets LADA
I’m a MAN who has recently bought a house in the local area with my other autoimmune conditions. I am 25-40.
