Classifications Flashcards
What are the 10 classifications of soils recognized by Canada?
- chernozemic
- solonetzic
- podzolic
- gleysolic
- luvisolic
- brunisolic
- regosolic
- vertisolic
- cryosolic
- organic
What are gleysols?
in water saturated areas
very saturated soils that have poor drainage and are gleyed
What are podzols?
coastal, forest soils, usually coniferous
acidic soil with a distinct E horizon
can have an iron pan
Which soils have a distinct E horizon or an iron pan?
podzols
What are solonetz?
grassland soils, usually in dry areas with a basin or depression
hardpan soils
with high sodium content in the B horizon
high pH
clay rich
what are organic soils?
associated with the accumulation of OM in water logged conditions = PEAT
what are regosols?
newly and poorly developed soils without a B horizon
could be caused by a catastrophic event
what are cryosols?
soils in the Arctic or tundra where there is permafrost
Which soils have higher OM content: grasslands or forests?
grasslands bc of their extensive underground root systems
Which soils store half the world’s carbon? how?
cryosols
the freeze/thaw turbulation has buried carbon for thousands of years
how does soil formation begin?
when OM from plants and animals are added to fresh sediment or PM
