classification unit vocab Flashcards
classification
where scientists group living organisms
Taxonomy
the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematic.
Binomial nomenclature
the system of nomenclature in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism, the first one indicating the genus and the second the specific epithet
Taxon
a taxonomic group of any rank, such as a species, family, or class.
Genus
a class of things that have common characteristics and that can be divided into subordinate kinds.
Family
is one of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks above the rank of genus
Order
is a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. Other well-known ranks are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, class, family, genus, and species, with order fitting in between class and family.
Class
is a taxonomic rank, as well as a taxonomic unit, a taxon, in that rank. Other well-known ranks in descending order of size are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus, and species, with class fitting between phylum and order.
Phylum
is a level of classification or taxonomic rank below Kingdom and above Class. Traditionally, in botany the term division has been used instead of phylum, although the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants accepts the terms as equivalent
Division
is a rhetorical style that, in essay format, takes a whole and splits it up into parts and then places the divided information into various categories.
Kingdom
into which living organisms are grouped in Lineman taxonomy, ranking above a phylum.
Domain
also super kingdom or empire, is the highest taxonomic rank of organisms in the three-domain system of taxonomy designed by Carl Woese, an American microbiologist and biophysicist.
Phylogeny
of organisms based on their assumed evolutionary histories and relationships.
Characters
is an operation provided by a group of functions in the ANSI C Standard Library for the C programming language
Molecular clock
technique is an important tool in molecular systematics, the use of molecular genetics information to determine the correct scientific classification of organisms or to study variation in selective forces.
