Classification Test 7 Science Flashcards
Who invented the first classification system?
Carl Linnaeus
What is the definition of classification?
Grouping things to make sense of the world
What is a dichotomous key?
A diagram where you use questions with 2 answers only to identify organisms
What are the rules of creating an effective dichotomous key?
The characteristics of each division should:
-Remain the same for that object so it can always be placed in the same group
-Have two options only so all items can be placed in one of two groups
-Be objective so everyone will place the items in the same group
If an animal has a backbone, what would it be called?
Vertebrate/Chordata
If an animal doesn’t have a backbone, what would it be called?
Invertebrate
If an organism is endothermic, what does that mean?
It uses internally generated heat to maintain it’s body temperature (warm-blooded)
If an organism is ectothermic, what does that mean?
It uses external heat sources to maintain it’s body temperature (cold-blooded)
Describe the difference between a plant and an animal
An animal can move (walk, swim, fly, etc) and a plant cannot.
Describe how today’s classification system has changed from Carl Linnaeus’s
It began with 2 kingdoms (plants and animals)
Now it has 5 kingdoms (plants, animals, fungi, monera, and protists)
Explain why biologists use body structure and function instead of size, colour and behaviour to classify.
Because things like colour, size etc are subjective which means they can differ from person to person ex. one person might say the colour is beige and another would say it’s brown
List the characteristics of the acronym MRS GREN
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrients
List a similarity and a difference between a fish and a crab
Similarity: reproduce via eggs
Difference: crab invertebrate, fish vertebrate
