Classification of Symphatomimetics/Adrenomimetics Flashcards
What are the classifications of sympathomimetic drugs?
Direct-acting, indirect-acting, mixed-acting
What do direct-acting sympathomimetics do?
Directly stimulate the adrenergic receptor, either norepinephrine or epinephrine. In other words, the drug is the one who stimulates the receptor.
What do indirect-acting sympathomimetics do?
Stimulate release of norepinephrine from nerve endings. In other words, The indirect-acting drug stimulates release of norepinephrine so that norepinephrine will be the one that stimulates the receptor.
Which drug is an example of an indirect-acting sympathomimetic?
Amphetamine
What do mixed-acting sympathomimetics do?
It is both a direct and indirect acting. It stimulates adrenergic receptor sites and stimulates release of norepinephrine from nerve endings
Which drug is an example of a mixed-acting sympathomimetic?
Ephedrine
