What is Schizophrenia?
Serious psychotic disorder that causes abnormal thinking and perceptions which causes problems with reality.
NOT split personality
What are the positive symptoms?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Disorganised speech
Disorganised or catatonic behaviour
What are the negative symptoms?
Avolition
Speech poverty
Flattened affect
Anhedonia
What are hallucinations?
Unusual sensory experiences E.g. hearing voices, feeling sensations that aren’t there
What are delusions?
Irrational beliefs E.g. paranoia, grandeur (thinking you’re famous) and reference (thinking there are messages hidden in TV or radio or music)
What is disorganised speech?
Speech that is hard to follow due to a lack of pattern and conversation changes (due to disorganised thoughts)
E.g. word salad (combination of random words)
What is disorgansied or catatonic behaviour?
Acting bizarrely E.g. wearing winter clothes in July
Lack of response to environment
Rigid posture
What is avolition?
Lack of will/motivation E.g. hygiene and work
What is speech poverty?
Reduced quality and quantity of speech
Long pauses
What is flattened affect?
Range and intensity of emotions expressed is limited
E.g. facial expression and tone of voice
What is anhedonia?
Lack of pleasure and pleasure seeking
Lack of enjoyment in activities and sensations
