What is schizophrenia?
- mental illness where p has lost touch with reality
- p doesn’t have insight into disorder
- affects 1% of the population
what are the symptoms of schizophrenia given by the DSM 5?
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganised speech
- behaviour and other symptoms that cause social and occupational dysfunction
What are positive symptoms?
An addition to an individuals behaviour
What are some examples of positive symptoms?
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganised speech
What are delusions?
- distorted belief
- doesn’t feel control of their own thoughts and feelings
- e.g believe neighbour is plotting against them
What are hallucinations?
- voices are most common
- aren’t real but feel real to person hearing them
- often a running commentary on the persons behaviour
What is disorganised speech?
- result of disorganised though processes
- speech is confused and muddled
- slip between topics mid sentence
- sounds like gibberish (word salad)
What are negative symptoms?
Losses of emotions, interests, pleasure e.t.c
What are some examples of negative symptoms?
- speech poverty (alogia)
- avolition
What is speech poverty (alogia)?
- reduces quality of speech
- p speaks infrequently
- when they do speak it lacks fluency
- empty replies to questions
- unlikely to engage in spontaneous speech
What is avolition?
- reduced interests and desires
- Inability to initiate and persist in goal related behaviour
what is the book used to classify schizophrenia?
DSM 5
how does the DSM 5 diagnose schizophrenia?
- symptoms must be represent for 6 months
- include at least 1 month active symptoms
- must show at least 2 specified symptoms
what are the 3 signs of avolition?
Andreason (1982)
Identified 3 signs of avolition:
- poor hygiene and grooming
- lack of energy
- lack of persistence in work and education
