Classification of Periodontal Disease Flashcards
What is stage 1 periodontitis (severity and inter proximal bone loss at worst site)
Severity - early/mild
Interproximal bone loss - <15% or 2mm
What is stage 2 periodontitis (severity and inter proximal bone loss at worst site)
Severity - moderate
Interproximal bone loss - coronal third of tooth
What is stage 3 periodontitis (severity and inter proximal bone loss at worst site)
Severity - severe (potential for additional tooth loss)
Interproximal bone loss - mid third of the root
What is stage 4 periodontitis (severity and inter proximal bone loss at worst site)
Severity - very severe (potential for loss of dentition)
Interproximal bone loss - apical third of the root
Where should you calculate bone loss form (which site)
at the worst affected site (do not take an average, instead take stage from worst site)
If a patient has previously lost teeth due to periodontal disease, which stage should they be assigned
stage 4
How do you give a patient a grade for periodontal disease
- Fine the worst site of bone loss and assign it a percentage
- Know patients age
- Bone loss % / age
What would a Grade A periodontal disease be
- slow progression
- <0.5 % bone loss/age
- Bone loss is less than half the patients age
What would Grade B periodontal disease be
- moderate progression
- 0.5 to 1.0 % bone loss/age
What would Grade C periodontal disease be
- Rapid progression
- > 1 % bone loss/ age
- Bone loss is more than patient age
if the extent of distribution is localised what does this mean?
<30% of teeth
If the extent of distribution is generalised what does this mean ?
> 30% of teeth
What do you include in a periodontal disease diagnostic statement
- distribution (generalised or localised)
- stage
- Grade
- stability
- risk factors
What is the BSP guidelines of a patient who scores a BPE of 3
- if a sextant scores 3, this sextant should be reviewed AFTER initial treatment and a 6 point pocket completed for that sextant only (and only after treatment)
What is the SDCEP guidelines for a patient who scores a BPE of 3
- if a sextant scores 3, a 6 point pocket chart should be completed for that sextant BEFORE and AFTER treatment. Full periodontal examination of all teeth and RSD where necessary.
