Classification of Particles (aaaaaaaa) Flashcards
What are the two main classes of particles?
Hadrons and Leptons
What are the properties of hadrons?
Affected by the strong nuclear force, not fundamental so made up of other particles
What are the properties of leptons?
Not affected by strong nuclear force, fundamental, can change into other leptons via weak interaction
What are some examples of leptons?
Electrons, muons, neutrinos
What do muons decay into?
Electrons
What are the subgroups of hadrons?
Baryons and mesons
What are the properties of baryons?
Made up of 3 quarks, will eventually decay into protons
What are the properties of mesons?
Made up of 1 quark and 1 antiquark; unstable
What are some examples of mesons?
Pions such as pi+ and pi 0, Kaons such as K+ and K-
What are pions the exchange particle for?
The strong force
What are nucleons?
Protons and neutrons
What are some subgroups of baryons?
Nucleons and sigma particles
