Q

What is a compound and is a pure substance or a mixture?

A

Compounds are also pure substances when two or more elements are combined chemically. However, these substances can be broken down into separate elements by chemical methods.

Q

Characteristics and properties of pure substances

A
  • Pure substances are made of a single type of molecule or atom, so they are mostly homogeneous
  • Pure substances are uniform and constant
  • The substances have fixed boiling and melting points.

Q

Characteristics and properties of mixtures

A
  • It does not have any specific properties, the properties of the mixture are a result of the average properties of all the constituents.
  • It is formed as a result of a physical change.
  • They have a variable composition.
  • Their melting and boiling points differ

Q

Methods to separate mixtures

A
  • evaporation, the solution is heated until the organic solvent evaporates (turns into gas) and leaves behind the solid residue
  • distillation, two or more pure liquids, liquid mixture is evaporated, condensed and the isolated. The mixture is heated and a component is evaporated, the vapor moves through a condenser and is collected in a liquid state.
  • filtration: separates a liquid from an insoluble solid. Used to remove solid particles from the liquid. Use filtering paper or other materials
