Atomic, mass Numbers / protons, neutrons electrons Flashcards
What is equal to the atomic number?
The atomic number is equal to the number of protons of 1 atom of the element
What is equal to the mass number?
The mass number is equal to the number of protons + the number of electrons
M= p+é
What changes and not changes in a isotope
In a isotope, the atomic number never changes because is the identity of the element. On the other hand the atomic mass change as its a isotope
What are isotopes? (Simple definition)
Are atoms with same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Diferentes in mass and physical properties, and have almost the same chemical properties
What type of isotopes are there?
There are stable isotopes, which do not emit radiation, and there are unstable isotopes, which do emit radiation
Characteristics of a stable isotope
- the fist 80 elements of the periodic table have stable isotopes
- stable isotopes can be isued to understand and manage water and land resources due to its properties
Unstable isotopes or radioisotopes characteristics
- They emit different levels of radiation
- useful in medicine, industry, agriculture and industrial applications
