Classification of living organisms Flashcards
Who is considered the father of classification
Carl Linnaeus (1707 -1778) a Swedish botanist developed the binomial method of naming organisms
What is classification?
Putting living organisms into groups with similar characteristics
Identify the classification groups in order.
Keeping Precious Creatures Organised For Grumpy Scientists
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What are the 5 kingdoms
Originally only 3 we now classify living creatures into 5 kingdoms
Animals Plants Fungi Protists Prokaryotes
How does the binomial system of classification name organisms?
By their genus and species Examples all the big cats belong to the genus panthera, this is represented by the letter P, each species is named P leo - lion P tigris - tiger P onca - jaguar
What two phylum are animals divided into
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
with and without backbones
What are the 5 classes of vertebrates
Mammals Amphibians Reptiles Birds Fish
What are the limitations of the original system of classification
- It was organised on the basis of appearance rather than their genome
- There are species such as salamanders which can produce fertile offspring when they mate with other species, breaking the rule for definition of a species
Describe the 3 domain system of classification proposed by Carl Woese
Woese used molecular analysis of the genome to produce his 3 domains
- Eukaryota - all animals plants fungi and protists
- Bacteria
- Archaea - primitive bacteria found in extreme environments
