Classification of Disease - Exam 1 Flashcards
Infectivity
Ability of the pathogen to invade and multiply within another living organism with subsequent injury to the host
Colonization
the act of establishing a presence
Microflora
normal harmless inhabitants both internal and externally occupying the
body which does not adversely affect it (commensalism)
Mutualism
is an interaction between host and microorganism where both are benefitted
Parasitic
an interaction between host and microorganism where only the microorganism benefits from the relationship
Communicability
Ability to spread from one individual to others
Virulence
the disease-producing potential or strength of the microorganism at the time of infection (capacity)
Opportunistic Pathogen
microorganism that are capable of producing an infectious disease
Pathogenicity
Ability of an agent to produce disease – success depends on:
1. Communicability
2. Infectivity
3. Extent of tissue damage
4. Virulence
Portal of Entry
Route by which a pathogenic microorganism infects the host
Toxigenicity
Ability to produce soluble toxins or endotoxins, factors that influence the pathogen’s degree of virulence
