Classification of Coasts Flashcards
What are 6 long term coast types?
Primary, Secondary, Emergent, Submergent, Marine Cliff Profile, Sub-aerial cliff profile
What are the 5 short term coast types?
Microtidal, Mesotidal, Macrotidal, Low energy, High energy
Define Primary coasts
Land based processed dominate
Define Secondary coasts
Marine processes dominate (water)
Define Emergent coasts
Coasts are rising relative to sea level
Define Submergent coasts
Coasts being flooded by the sea
What tidal range do Microtidal coasts have?
0-2 m
What tidal range do Mesotidal coasts have?
2-4 m
What tidal range do Macrotidal coasts have?
Greater than 4m
Define low energy coasts
Sheltered coasts with limited fetch and low wind speeds resulting in small waves
Define high energy coasts
Exposed coasts, face prevailing winds with long wave fetches resulting in powerful waves
Define Marine Cliff Profile
Erosion by wave action dominates. Cliffs are steep and un-vegetated
Define Sub-aerial cliff profile
Weathering, surface run-off and mass movement create shallower curved cliffs
