classification and the five kingdoms Flashcards
what is classification
proccess of placing living things into groups
why do humans classify organisms?
-convenient
-makes studying living things more manageable
-makes identification easier
-helps us identify relationships between species
what is the taxonomic hierarchy?
domain
kingdom
phylum
class
order
family
genus
species
what are the 5 kingdom classifications
prokaryotae, protoctista, fungi, plantae, animalia
what does hierarchy mean?
big groups split into smaller groups
what happens to the organisms in the taxonomic groups as you move down the hierarchy from kingdom to species
increasing similarities but decreasing number of organisms in each group
why is it easier to place an organism in the right kingdom than right order
because more detailed descriptions are needed for order
what does binomial mean
how does the binomial naming system work
-two-name system
-using Genus and species to name organisms globally
-in italics or underlined with genus capitalised and lowercase species eg Homo sapiens
define species
-group of organisms that can freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
-organisms very similar in appearance anatomy physiology biochemistry and genetics
what are distinctive features for each five kingdoms of classification?
-animalia = usually can move around, eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotophic
-plantae = autotrophic, chlorophyll and cellulose cell wall, eukaryotic, multicellular
-fungi= chitin cell wall, eukaryotic, saprophytic
-prokaryotae - no nucleus (bacteria)
-protoctista -single cells or multicellular eukaryotic cell
