Classification and Measurements of Dental Caries Flashcards
Index to measure caries prevalence of a person.
WHO
Measure of caries process and its effect on patients. Attempts to balance need for data collection and management of disease.
ADA caries classification system.
Measure of the extent and complexity of lesion. Attempt to balance preservation of natural tooth tissue and choice of restorative material.
Mount- Hume classification system.
Similar to Mount- Hume system. Site and stage of lesion.
Site-stage classification system.
Hierarchical caries assessment index describing the complete range of caries progression.
The caries assessment spectrum and treatment (CAST) index.
Provide an international acceptable measure with a complete range of caries profession/stages.
International Caries Detection and assessment system (ICDAS).
What are the 8 things that are the basis of caries classification?
- Morphology of lesion or anatomic tooth site.
- Treatment of caries (DMF).
- Prior condition of tooth.
- Severity and rate of caries progression.
- Extent of lesion.
- Age.
- Etiology.
- Affected tissue.
Surface sound. No evidence of treated or untreated clinical caries (slight staining allowed).
O
Initial caries. No clinically detectable loss of substance. May be significant staining, but loss of substance cannot be positively diagnosed.
D1
Enamel caries. Loss of tooth substance in pits etc. No evidence of cavitation into dentin.
D2
Caries of dentin. Explorer point must enter a lesion with certainty.
D3
Pulpal involvement. Pulp should not be probed.
D4
Numerical scale with upper and lower limits with score on the scale corresponding to the specific criteria.
Indices or indexes.
What are the 6 properties of an ideal index?
- Validity
- Reliability
- Acceptability
- Sensitivity
- Quantifiability
- Clarity, simplicity and objectivity.
What are the 4 criteria for choice of index?
- Should predict progression of disease.
- Must be objective.
- Should indicate presence or absence of disease.
- Able to evaluate response to therapeutic measures.
