Classification and Characteristics Flashcards
Physical Characteristics
- When classifying organisms, linear used the physical (or morphological) characteristics or organisms for the basis of his groups e.g humans have backbones
Methods of Reproduction
- important characteristic that can be used to classify organisms, one major difference is between organisms that can reproduce sexually (with mixing gametes from z individuals) and those that produce asexually (without forming gametes)
- there are species of plants and animals that reproduce each way
Biological Classification
-The process of grouping organisms based on similar characteristics and shared ancestors
Groups
-Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
Archae
-unicellular prokaryotes with no nucleus and no membrane- bound organelles
-live in harsh environments and may represent the first cells o have evolved
-e.g sewage treatment plants , thermal vents etc
Eubacteria
-unicellular prokaryotes with no nucleus and no membrane- bound organelles
-some of which cause human diseases are present in almost all habitat on earth
-live in intestines of animals
-both auto and hetero, asexually
Taxonomy
-the science of naming, classifying and describing organisms
