Classification and Cells Flashcards
What is classification?
Scientists classify organisms by their structure and how closely related they are. They are arraged into groups and categories based on the features they have in common.
What is the order from the broadest grouping to specific categories in the classification hierachy?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What is the system that Carolus Linnaeus developed to classify organisms using two terms in Latin?
Binomial Nomenclature. It means a name with two terms. The first word of the term defines Genus, while the second defines the Species itself.
What are the main features of plants?
- Multicellular
- Cells that are surrounded by cell walls
- Autotropis, they can feed themselves
- Make their food using photosynthesis
- Reproduce by seeds, conifers, spores, or
asexually
What are the main features of animals?
- Multicellular
- Heterotrophs, absorb their nutrients from other organisms
- Vertebrates or invertibrates
What are the main features of fungi?
- Can be single or multicellular
- Mushrooms, yeast, or mold
- Heterotrophs, absorb their nutrients from
other organisms - Reproduce with spores
- Cells that are surrounded by cell walls
What are the main features of protists?
- Mostly single-celled
- Some heterotrophs, some autotropis
- Includes amoebas, algae, or paramecium
What are the main features of archaebacteria?
- Single-cellular
- Live in extreme enviroments like hot
springs and very salty water
What are the main features of eubacteria?
- Single celled organisms
- Includes bacteria of all types
- Some heterotrophs, some autotropis
What is a virus?
A virus is a strand of viral hereditary information (DNA) enclosed in a protein coat. It attaches itself to a healthy cell and injects its hereditary information into the cell, The virus uses the cell to assemble its indentical offspring, and then it bursts the cell open, releasing all of its replicated viruses.
