Classification Flashcards
Why do we bother classifying organisms
When Biologists from different countries discuss a particular organism they need to be sure they are all referring to the same one. We need an internationally recognised way of identifying different groups of organisms
What is taxonomy
Taxonomy is the science of describing, classifying and naming living organisms. This includes plants, animals and microorganisms
What is the order of the taxonomic groups
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species
What are the 3 main taxonomic groups
The archea, the bacteria and the eukaryota
What is the difference between analogous features and homologous features
Analogous features are features that look similar or have a similar function but are not from the same biological origin whereas homologous features are structures which genuinely show common ancestry
What is the most common definition of a species and what is its limitation
A species is a group of organisms with similar characteristics that interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Some of the limitations are that all of the organisms in a species cannot attempt to interbreed to produce fertile offspring because they don’t all live in the same area
