Classification Flashcards
How many kingdoms did Carl Linneas create?
2 (animals and plants, with a genus and species for each species of animal)
Why were there 5 kingdoms rather than 2?
Scientists now understand how organisms evolve
The system now contains organisms in small groups which have derived from a recent, common ancestor
The kingdoms are based on what the cells of an organism look like
What are the 3 main domains organisms are split into?
Archaea- no nucleus, genes containing unused sections of DNA
Bacteria- no nucleus, no unused sections of DNA
Eukaryote- cells with a nucleus, unused sections in genes (animals, plants, fungi etc)
How do scientists work out how closely related two organisms are?
The more DNA the 2 organisms have in common, the more recently they have evolved from a common ancestor (MORE CLOSELY RELATED)
