Breeds And Varieties Flashcards
What is artificial selection?
When humans choose certain organisms because they have useful characteristics
What is selective breeding?
When humans choose an organist hat has a certain characteristic and breed more of these organisms, making THE CHOSEN CHARACTERISTIC MORE OBVIOUS.
What is genetic engineering?
Altering the genome of an organism, usually be adding end from another organism.
List at least 2 things plants and animals are selectively bred for.
Any 2 from:
- disease resistance
- yield
- coping with certain conditions
- fast growth
- taste
What is an organism that has undergone genetic engineering called?
GMO (genetically modified organisms)
List some advantages of selective breeding.
- New varieties may be more economically important- produce more or better quality food
- Animals that don’t cause harm can be produced (eg: cattle without horns)
List some disadvantages of selective breeding.
- Could get rid of useful characteristics for future conditions
- Animal welfare concerns
- Huge Numbers of some variety/breed are all susceptible to same diseases
List some advantages of genetic engineering
- Cna improve diet of those in poorer countries (eg: Golden Rice- vitamin A)
- Human insulin produced for diabetics
List some disadvantages of genetic engineering
- Seeds for many GM crops are expensive
- Some diabetics can’t use insulin from GM bacteria
- Irreversible effects
- May pass on resistance to herbicides
- No evidence to support that food is bad for health
