Classification
Grouping of organisms or objects based on a set of criteria that helps organize, communicate, and retain information.
Taxonomy
Branch of biology that identifies names, and classifies species based on their natural relationships.
Binomial nomenclature
the system of nomenclature in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism
Taxon
a taxonomic group of any rank, such as a species, family, or class.
Genus
a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family
Family
a family is a taxonomic rank, or a taxon at that rank.
Order
a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes
Class
a taxonomic rank, as well as a taxonomic unit, a taxon, in that rank
Phylum
Traditionally, in botany the term division has been used instead of phylum
Division
division refers to a rank equivalent to phylum.
Kingdom
a taxonomic rank that is composed of smaller groups called phyla
Domain
a taxon in the highest rank of organisms, higher than a kingdom
Phylogeny
the history of the evolution of a species or group
Characters
any observable feature, or trait, of an organism, whether acquired or inherited.
Molecular Clock
figurative term for a technique that uses the mutation rate of biomolecules
