Classification Flashcards
Linnaean vs phylogeny/cladistics
Why classification changes
It changes as we learn more about organisms and how they are related
Binomial nomenclature
Uses two names to name an organism.
The genus and species.
3 domains.
Eukarya
Archaea
Bacteria
6 kingdoms
Eubacteria Archaebacteria Protist Fungus Plant Animal
Binary fission
Asexual reproduction of bacteria
Conjugation
Exchange of genetic material in bacteria.
Transformation
Bacteria can pick up DNA from environment
Lytic cycle
Virus enters host cell
Injects its DNA so host cell will make copies of virus until it burst the cell open.
Lysogenic cycle
Virus DNA embeds into host cell DNA and stay there as the host divides and replicates. Virus can then trigger into lytic cycle.
Protists
Eukaryotes and unicellular or colonial. But no specialization.
Can be plant-like. Animal-like or fungus-like
Fungi
Eukaryotes. Multicellular (except yeast) and have cell walls made of chitin. Heterotrophs that get their food from decomposing organisms
4 types of plant tissues
- Vascular (xylem & phloem)
- Dermal tissue. Outer skin like layers.
- Ground tissue. Support. Storage
- Woody tissue. Firmest ground tissue. Not alive.
