Classification Flashcards
The action or process of organizing something according to shared qualities or characteristics
Classification
The branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms.
Taxonomy
The system in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism, the first one indicating the genus and the second the specific epithet.
Binomial Nomenclature
A taxonomic group of any rank, such as a species, family, or class.
Taxon
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; above species and below family, and is denoted by a capitalized Latin name.
Example: Struthio for Ostrich
Genus
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified between order and genus.
Example: Struthionidae for Ostrich
Family
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified between class and family.
Example: Struthioniformes for Ostrich
Order
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified between phylum and order.
Example: Aves for Ostrich
Class
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified between class and kingdom.
Example: Chordata for Ostrich
Phylum
The action of separating something into parts, or the process of being separated.
Division
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks; it is classified above phylum.
Example: Animalia for Ostrich
Kingdom
Also superkingdom or empire, is the highest taxonomic rank of organisms
Domain
The branch of biology that deals with phylogenesis.
Which is: the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms, or of a particular feature of an organism.
Phylogeny
Any observable feature, or trait, of an organism, whether acquired or inherited.
Character
The average rate at which a species’ genome accumulates mutations, used to measure their evolutionary divergence and in other calculations.
