Classification Flashcards
Who started classification?
Karl Linneas
What is classification?
Categorising species based on evolution, genes, DNA, plant sex organs and features.
What is natural classification?
Grouping based on evolutionary connections
What is artificial classification?
Grouping based on physical features
Name the five kingdoms
Plants, animals, fungi, protoctista and prokaryotes.
Give an example of a protoctista
Algae
Give an example of a prokaryote
Bacteria-no nucleus
What groups within the kingdom do we classify organisms into?
Kingdom, phylum groups, class, order, family, genus, species.
Define kingdom
Large group, few common features
Define phylum groups
Eg. Vertebrates large group, few common features
Define class
Large group, several orders eg. Mammals, few features in common.
Define order
Few features similar eg. Carnivores
Define family
Groups that have similar characteristics eg.dogs
Define genus
Similar characteristics, don’t breed together eg.foxes
Define species
Lots of features common, breed and produce fertile offspring
Why do we class living things?
Make them easier to study
Why is the binomial species important?
It is the international basis of naming species.
Name three problems of classifying species
Hybrids
Organisms that reproduce asexually
Ongoing evolution
Why would closely related species have different features?
Live in different types of habitats.
What is a hybrid?
Two different breeds that breed to produce fertile offspring eg.dogs
