Carbon Cycle and nitrogen cycle Flashcards
How much energy does combustion release?
All energy in biomass
Name the 4 processes that release carbon dioxide
Combustion, respiration, decay and decomposition
Why do plants respire?
To get energy from foods-release CO2
What do plants contain?
Co2, fats, proteins
What does animal respiration do? (Herbivore)
Break down co2, fats and proteins on plants by respiration. Carbon in glucose becomes part of the co2 molecule.
Glucose+ oxygen —- carbon dioxide + water
Why do plants absorb carbon dioxide?
To make carbohydrates by photosynthesis.
Give an example of a detrivore
Earth worms, maggots
What is saprotroph?
Food outside body and absorb nutrient-fungi
Why do plants need nitrates?
To grow- proteins
Where do nitrates in soil come from?
Fertilisers and nitrates
What does nitrifying bacteria do?
Converts ammonia to nitrates.
What does nitrogen fixing bacteria do?
Converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia then into protein.
Where is rhizobium bacteria found?
Root nodules of legumes
What does denitrifying bacteria do?
Breaks nitrogen down
What is nitrates in soil broken down by?
Denitrifying bacteria
