Classification Flashcards
What is Classification?
a hierarchical system of organisms based on shared characteristics
What is a Hierarchy?
series of large groups split into smaller groups but there is no overlap between groups
What do classification groupings show?
More closely related organisms are grouped together
As you move down, organisms become more and more related
As you move down, there are more groups but fewer organisms in those groups
What are the 8 taxonomic groups?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
What is Courtship behaviour?
behaviour that is carried out by organisms to attract a mate of the correct species
What are examples of Courtship behaviour?
Releasing chemicals - insects
Using sound - birds
Colourful displays - birds
Why is Courtship behaviour species specific?
only members of the same species will be able to perform and respond to that specific behaviour, allows members of the same species to recognise each other to prevent interbreeding and ensuring reproduction is successful
