Classification Flashcards
Who developed classification
Carl Von Linne before the theory of evolution. His theory was based on characteristics
Why is classification used
To organism species in a meaningful way
Three main ways to classify organisms:
Internal structure - four chamber heart
External structure- fur, feathers
Chemical composition- photosynthesis
5 kingdoms
Animilia Protista Monera Plants Fungi
Animalia
No cell wall, eukaryotic and heterotrophic
Plants
Photosynthetic, cell wall, eukaryotic, autotrohic
Fungi
Cell wall of chitin , heterotrophic, cell wall, eukaryotic
Mineral
Prokaryotic, bacteria, Cyanobacteria,
Protista
Single celled eukaryotic am can form collectors
Mix of photosynthetic and heterotrophic
To identify species must:
Must be able to interbreed
- must produced fertile offspring
- must be in natural conditions
Levels of kingdom
Most diverse: KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS OFDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES
Human classification
Kingdom: Animali PHYLUM: Chordata class MAMMALIA Order: primates Family:homonidae Genus: homo Species: sapienns
Why don’t we use common names
- scientific names re universal and do not vary from language to language
- common names suggest a relationship between organisms that don’t really exists eg. Starfish, catfish
4 classes of Anthropods
Crustacean s
Arachnids
Myriapods
Insects
