Classification Flashcards
What is the hierarchical classification?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What are the 4 main classification systems?
-Hierarchical classification
-Linnean system, physical similarities
-Methods of reproduction, asexual and sexual, r and k strategists
-Molecular sequences, molecular phylogeny, also called cladistics
Define Clade
A clade is a group of organisms that have evolved from a common ancestor
What common assumptions are made about clades?
-common ancestry
-bifurcation (division)
-physical change
What is an interspecific hybrid and an example
The offspring of two different species that is infertile, for example a mule is the infertile offspring of a donkey and a horse
why is there a need for multiple definitions of species?
because some species definitions/concepts cannot be applied to organisms that do not reproduce sexually
What is the purpose of stratified sampling?
To allow for proper representation of the habitat in consideration of it’s size when there are multiple habitats being sampled
What is point sampling?
Individual points are chosen using a grid reference and organisms are recorded
Good for abundance and community composition
May miss organisms in low abundance
what are quadrats?
Provides a known unit area of sampling
What are ecosystems made up of?
Varied habitats including microhabitats and ecoregions
How is the process of classifying ecosystems an important step towards effective ecosystem management?
-The process of classifying an old growth forest enables managers/ decision makers to make decisions about its management.
-Agreement about the classification allows stakeholders to make decisions to serve a wide range of values.
-Classification helps support effective management of activities such as prescribed burning.
-Classification of ecosystems helps to support understanding of their unique interactions and the effect of specific human impacts, leading to longer term resilience.
