Classification Flashcards
1
Q
Define classification.
A
the grouping together of similar organisms
2
Q
what is the science of classification called?
A
Taxonomy
3
Q
Classification is based on the similarities and differences from:
A
- Phenotype - physical features
- Genotypes - DNA
- Proteins
4
Q
What is Domain?
A
The largest groups: all living organisms fit into 3 domains;
• Bacteria
• Archae
• Eukaryota
5
Q
What is kingdom?
A
Smaller groups: 5 kingdoms: • Fungi • Prokaryotae • Protoctista • Plantae • Animalia
6
Q
What are the 8 Classifications?
A
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
7
Q
How are each species named?
A
Each species are referred to by its genes and species. - Binomial Naming
8
Q
How do scientists classify new organism or reclassify existing ones?
A
They use Molecular Phylogeny (similarities between DNA and proteins).
- study DNA base sequence and protein amino acid sequence
- Find number of similarities and differences
- The more similarities the more closely related they are and the more recently they shared a common ancestor.
